Blepharoplasty in Traverse City

What is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a procedure that can improve the appearance of drooping eyelids to reveal a smooth, better-defined eyelid and a more alert and rejuvenated appearance. Drooping of the eyelid is common in elderly patients but can happen in younger patients as well.

Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper and lower lids to improve the appearance of excess eyelid skin, droopy eyelids, or orbital fat. This eyelid surgery can also help improve symptoms like excessive tearing and irritated eyes.

In certain cases, insurance companies consider blepharoplasty medically necessary. However, many blepharoplasties are performed purely for cosmetic benefit.

How Do I Get a Blepharoplasty?

The first step to scheduling a blepharoplasty is to schedule a consultation with your eye doctor at Traverse City eye.

During this visit, you will meet with your eye doctor and discuss your cosmetic goals. Your eye doctor will ask you about your symptoms and give you a detailed explanation of your surgical and nonsurgical options.

Your eye doctor will give you a thorough examination to determine if surgery is appropriate for you. They may ask you to complete some tests to determine if your droopy lids interfere with your vision.

If you are considered a good candidate for the procedure, your eye doctor will schedule you and give you instructions on care before and after the procedure.

Does Insurance Cover the Blepharoplasty Procedure?

At your consultation with your eye doctor, you will learn if you are a candidate for a blepharoplasty. During this visit, your eye doctor will discuss with you whether or not they think your insurance will cover this procedure based on the severity of your symptoms.

Many insurance companies require proof that the symptoms you are experiencing are causing a hindrance to your vision. Your eye doctor may get pictures of your eyelids or perform various tests to show interference of your vision if they think it is possible.

It is always a good idea to contact your insurance to determine your coverage options prior to meeting with your eye doctor to make sure you understand your possible financial liabilities.

What is the Recovery Process After Blepharoplasty?

The blepharoplasty procedure results will appear gradually as swelling and bruising subside. The results will reveal a smooth, better-defined eyelid and a more alert and rejuvenated appearance. It is essential to closely follow a list of instructions provided to you by your eye doctor after your blepharoplasty procedure. You will have appointments periodically with your surgeon so they can check on the progress of your recovery.

Some patients will have stitches that will automatically dissolve as they heal from the procedure. Most patients will have small scars from the surgery in their upper lids, but your surgeon will do the best they can to have the scar lie in the crease of your eyelid where it will be least noticeable.
